Day 3: Oscars Aftermath

Like everyone around here, I was glued to the TV last Sunday night (Monday morning in Manila) to watch the Oscars on ABC.  I was still hoping for an upset that never came.  I was 80% sure that The Social Network would not win Best Picture when Tom Hooper (gasp!) won the Best Director prize.  But I became 99% sure that it lost when Steven Spielberg said this:

"In a moment, one of these ten movies will join a list that includes on The Waterfront, Midnight Cowboy, The Godfather and The Deer Hunter. The other nine will join a list that includes The Grapes of Wrath, Citizen Kane, The Graduate and Raging Bull."

Which I think is a subtle dig at the eventual winner, as much as it was a consuelo de bobo for the losers (particularly The Social Network, which has been compared countless times to Citizen Kane).  I don't know about you, but I do like the films on that "losers" list more.  No wonder my pick this year lost :)

Anyway, that's all I have to say about the awards because the outcome made me more interested about the other highlight of the evening:  the red carpet fashion.  Here are my favorites:

Best Overall Look:  Jennifer Lawrence

Gown by Calvin Klein

The top looks like a Baywatch bathing suit, but who cares?  She looks gorgeous...I almost didn't recognize her!  This is such a va-va voom dress and it really fit her like a glove.

Best Hair:  Reese Witherspoon

Elle Woods, is that you?  I couldn't find a picture from the back, but trust me when I say this looked even more awesome from that angle.

Best Accessory:  Natalie Portman's jewelry

Earrings by Tiffany

Nope, I'm not talking about the baby bump.  I'm obsessed with those dangling plum-toned Tiffany earrings which matched her dress perfectly.  Lovely.

Best Color:  Amy Adams

Gown by L' Wren Scott

She was the only A-list star to wear this color (although Dale Dickey also wore blue, in a gown was so Taylor Swift circa 2010).  Not a fan of that huge necklace though.

Best Dresses (tie):  Hailee Steinfeld -
In a custom-made Marchesa dress

So age appropriate. And I can't believe she helped conceptualize this look!

Gwyneth Paltrow -

Gown by Calvin Klein

This gown does not look as great in still pictures, but on TV it was fantastic.  It flowed and draped so nicely on her body.  Note to Cate Blanchett and Melissa Leo:  This is how you do a (sort of) futuristic look.  If there was an award for best designer at thie year's awards season, Calvin Klein would be the runaway winner  (Claire and Emma at the GG's and now Jennifer and Gwyneth at the Oscars.)

That's all for now.  Tomorrow:  Outlet shopping day.  I pray that the weather gods cooperate.
